# Use Vook from AI assistants

> Let Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients transcribe audio and read your transcripts through the Vook API.

The Vook MCP server lets an AI assistant work with your recordings directly.
Ask it to transcribe a meeting, then summarize it, pull out action items or
export subtitles, all inside the tool you already use.

**MCP** (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants
call external tools. The Vook server runs on your machine and turns each tool
call into a regular API request made with your API key. Usage spends your API
credits exactly as the API does.

## Before you start

You need:

* an API key (see [Authentication](/authentication)),
* Node.js 22 or later.

## Install

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Claude Code">
    ```bash theme={null}
    claude mcp add vook --env VOOK_API_KEY=vk_live_xxxxxxxx -- npx -y vook-mcp
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Claude Desktop">
    Open **Settings > Developer > Edit config** and add the `vook` entry:

    ```json theme={null}
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "vook": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "vook-mcp"],
          "env": { "VOOK_API_KEY": "vk_live_xxxxxxxx" }
        }
      }
    }
    ```

    Restart Claude Desktop.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Cursor">
    Add the same `vook` entry to `~/.cursor/mcp.json`:

    ```json theme={null}
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "vook": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "vook-mcp"],
          "env": { "VOOK_API_KEY": "vk_live_xxxxxxxx" }
        }
      }
    }
    ```
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

Any other MCP client that runs local servers works with the same command and
environment variable.

## Try it

Once connected, ask in plain language:

* "Transcribe `/Users/me/Downloads/interview.mp3` with speaker labels, then
  list the main decisions."
* "Find my transcription named weekly sync and export it as subtitles to
  `/Users/me/Desktop/sync.srt`."
* "Transcribe [https://example.com/podcast/episode-12.mp3](https://example.com/podcast/episode-12.mp3) in French."
* "Summarize my transcription named weekly sync."

The assistant picks the right tools, waits for the transcription to finish
and reads the result.

## Tools

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| `transcribe_file` | Uploads an audio or video file from your machine (up to 6 GB) and starts a transcription. Other file types are refused before anything leaves your machine. |
| `transcribe_url` | Starts a transcription from a public https link. |
| `get_job` | Reports a job's status, and can wait up to 50 seconds for it to finish. |
| `list_transcriptions` | Lists your transcriptions. Search matches transcription names. |
| `get_transcript` | Returns the transcript text with speakers and timestamps, page by page. |
| `summarize_transcript` | Returns a Markdown summary of a transcription, in its language. Each transcription has one summary; asking again returns the same one at no extra cost. |
| `export_transcript` | Exports as SRT, Markdown or HTML, or writes a PDF or DOCX file to disk. |

The server reads and creates transcriptions. Deleting stays in the web app and
the API, so content inside a recording can never remove your data.

## Credits

Transcriptions started from an assistant use your API credits at the same rate
as the API. If your balance runs out, the assistant reports the
`insufficient_api_credits` error; top up from the web app and ask again.

## Configuration

| Variable | Required | Default |
| - | - | - |
| `VOOK_API_KEY` | Yes | |
| `VOOK_API_URL` | No | `https://www.api.vook.ai` |

Next: [Errors and limits](/errors) lists every error code an assistant can report.
